Anyone want a cellular modem?
I'm getting rid of my cellular modem  and wanted to offer it around first.  Here's the details:
The only trick is that I need to get the answer soon.  Ideally before it is canceled on Monday, but even if it's been canceled they will reactivate the account at no charge, refund my early termination fee, and I can then transfer it to you with no fee, so long as you let me know in the next month or so.

To give you a sense of the speed of the link--I used to use it as my primary Internet connection.  It's not really feasible to watch video over it, but music is fine.  If you would mostly be using it to surf the web, send email, and / or ssh things around, it is jim-dandy.

If no one wants it permanently, I might see about setting up some sort of collective where we hot-potato it around to whomever is about to be traveling for a few days or a weekend.  Probably doesn't work out in the long run, but I like the idea.

Anyway, if anyone knows anyone who might want it, please let them know.  If you're interested, drop a comment below.

I wish I had the $60/month. But at least t-mobile's data plan doesn't seem that expensive in comparison.

It sounds neat, but $60 a month is steep. I assume that's basically the cost of your data plan? Is there a usage cap?

As to whether that's the cost of the data plan...I'm not quite sure how to answer that. The modem isn't a phone, so talking about the "data plan" as distinct from anything else doesn't make sense to me. But yes, it's $60/month to own and use the modem.

As to the usage cap--in theory, I think it's 5GB/month (not 100% sure, since I got the modem before that cap was added, so I might be grandfathered). I used to torrent over it pretty much 24/7 for weeks without ever having problems.

Can you tell me the name of your service plan? I want to call Verizon and ask some questions.

ETA: Is this the Novatel USB760 or the UTStarComm UT175? Or something else? You say 'USB' so there's a good chance it will talk to my NetBook but I have no CardBus or Express Sockets on this new thing.

It's the USB720, which is apparently no longer available but almost all the reviews are positive. See the edited post for full details.

Well, it works with Ubuntu and everything, and 5GB is plenty for most purposes.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'd get $60 of value out of it each month. It would really only benefit for 15 minutes of my bus trip, on the days when I remember to carry my laptop.

Sorry. :(
